Microsoft – a type stealer?

Today “reported a german newspaper”:http://www.sueddeutsche.de/computer/artikel/587/66521/ that Linotype accuses Microsoft for plagiating the type of Windows Vista.

For their new OS Microsoft has developed a new type called “Segoe UI”:http://blogs.msdn.com/jensenh/archive/2005/11/16/493388.aspx which is indeed very similar to Linotype’s Frutiger Next.
Only little details are different, for a layperson absolutely not obvious. So you can imho call the Segoe a plagiarism.

Unfortunately the evidence is hard to find because only the development data of Segoe could proof it but Micrsosft probably will not open it up.
Unlike any other Microsoft plans also to protect the type under software copyrights not like normally as art.

For me that is an absolute effrontery and should be legal persecuted.
Strange days in Redmond where decency and honour have gone…

But that is not a really new story… Microsoft software was always “inspired” by other tools, programs, os’, fonts… This time it’s just a little bit more obvious… :-)

Indeed, Microsoft always felt inspired by others ideas and knowledge. That reaches back to their earliest beginnings.

But in that moment as Microsoft started claiming their intellectual properties, empowering legal and political activities to save their digital rights and repelling demand the whole world for legalize their software patents it is truely a shame that they (self-called victims of digital thefts) start to steal others copyrighted work.

For me, that shows the real M$: what others do is simply criminal, when we make that for our profit it is okay.
